AKOYA CULTURED PEARLS are saltwater pearls produced in Japan by the oyster known by its scientific name PINCTADA FUCUTA.
The main body color is mostly white , cream, silver and often times have rose or blue overtones. Akoya Pearl harvesting is a very delicate yet a very exciting time for all pearl people. Among all the oysters in the pearl farms less than 50% survive the culturing process and only the top 5% is considered high quality pearls. In Japan, the harvesting usually takes place during the winer month as the cold water tends to yield better nacre quality and have shown a better harvest overall. Once the harvesting is completed the pearls are
sorted according to shape, size, luster and other quality before they are delivered to the marketplace. Sizes range from 2mm to 10mm the most popular sizes are between 6mm to 8mm.
SOUTH SEA CULTURED PEARLS comes in three types produced in saltwater, White South Sea, Golden South Sea and Black South Sea (AKA Tahitian Pearls) Pearls. White South
Sea Pearls and Golden South Sea pearls are mainly produced in Australia, Indonesia and Philippines by the oyster known by its scientific name PINCTADA MAXIMA. Sizes range from 9mm to 20mm. The main body color for the white south sea is mostly white or silver with rose or blue overtone, while the golden south sea pearls will have a main body color of yellow or yellow orange with cream or green overtone. Black South Sea Pearls are produced by the oyster known by its scientific name PINCTADA MARGARIFERA and grown in the atolls of Tahiti hence the commonly known name Tahitian Pearls. Sizes range from 7mm to 18mm the most popular sizes are between 8mm to 12mm. The main body color is black or grey with infinite combination of overtones.
